WIPO official visits Vietnam, makes proposals to boost IP ecosystem

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Deputy General Director of the Regional and National Development Sector Hasan Kleib has proposed that Vietnam focus on the youth, SMEs and women to boost the utilization of intellectual property as a tool for innovation.

SMEs make up 98 percent of all business enterprises in Vietnam.

WIPO also plans to establish an IP training institute in the country, ranked 48th in the recently released Global Innovation Index 2022 (GII 2022).

Vietnam is among the top three innovation economies in the lower middle-income bracket, according to WIPO’s GII 2022 report.

Kleib went on a working visit to Vietnam in September and met with officials of the National Office of Intellectual Property to discuss plans for boosting the country’s IP ecosystem and WIPO’s continuing support to the country.

“We agree that youth should be targeted to cope with ongoing development trends in IP. SMEs are also a key target, as they play an active and important role in the Vietnamese economy,” said Hung Tuan Nguyen, deputy head of patent at Tilleke & Gibbins in Hanoi.

“We support WIPO’s idea of establishing an IP training institute in Vietnam. With the ongoing development of IP in Vietnam, we need to increase social awareness of IP matters as well as prepare high-quality human resources for the future,” Nguyen added.

“We certainly support the idea to establish an IP training institute in Vietnam. In fact, we have an associate, Duc Anh Tran, who was selected for the WIPO Certified IP training course and will soon become an IP trainer,” said Loc Xuan Le, a principal at T&G Law Firm, Tilleke & Gibbins’s local associate firm.

To date, there are 12 other IP training institutes by WIPO around the world.
