Indonesia’s IP Experts 2025
31 May 2025

Government officials and intellectual property owners and practitioners received some good news in the 2025 International IP Index, published in April by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
In the report, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce praised efforts by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property to improve Indonesia’s IP enforcement environment, noting also “good cabinet-level coordination and coordinating framework for IP enforcement.” The report also gave the government credit for Indonesia’s Patent Prosecution Highway with the Japan Patent Office, and the availability of administrative relief for copyright infringement online.
Meanwhile, says Justisiari Kusumah, managing partner of K&K Advocates, writing on the firm’s website, in a survey conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce of 55 countries in 2024, it can be perceived that Indonesia’s International Intellectual Property Index has declined compared to 2023. “Indonesia’s position in the International IP index is in the 50th place, while in 2023 Indonesia ranked 49th out of 55 countries. Indonesia’s international IP Index score in 2024 is only 28.68, slightly above Ecuador, Pakistan, Algeria, Russia and Venezuela,” Kusumah wrote.
He notes that a number of countries in the ASEAN region have international IP index scores far above Indonesia. Singapore has a score of 80.11 and is ranked 13th out of 55 countries in the world, Malaysia has a score of 50.43 (ranked 28), the Philippines has a score of 40.17 (ranked 36), Vietnam has a score of 38.91 (rank 39), Brunei has a score of 38.75 (rank 40) and Thailand has a score of 36.11 (rank 44), while Indonesia is ranked 50th with a score of 28.68.
The international IP score of the Indonesian Index is compiled based on nine categories, namely patent, copyright, trademark, industrial design, trade secret, intellectual property commercialization, law enforcement, efficiency and law enforcement. “Each category has its own score,” Kusumah explained. “The international intellectual property index provides an overview of the condition of a country's intellectual property system, for example, how its legal protection system is.”
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce noted that Indonesia still struggles in areas of licensing and commercialization of IP assets, including technology transfer, that biopharmaceutical patentability standards are outside international norms, that Indonesia has a “challenging copyright environment with high levels of piracy, as administrative measures do not address mirror and linking sites,” and that the jurisdiction has “limited participation in international IP treaties,” among other challenges.
It is with this mostly positive report in mind that we turned to IP professionals in the region in order to understand better what clients need today. Asia IP asked a large number of professionals – mostly in-house counsel and corporate legal managers – what they were looking for from their legal service providers. From their answers, we have compiled our list of Indonesia’s IP Experts, those lawyers who understand what their clients need and are able to provide them with the best practical advice.
To anyone familiar with the intellectual property market in Indonesia, it is no surprise that Rouse leads the list of law firms represented on the list; the powerhouse law firm placed six lawyers on our list (Yurio Astary, Arifia Fajra, Tania Lovita, Nick Redfearn, Gunawan Suryomurcito and Lisa Yong), followed by SKC Law, which placed four lawyers on the list (Andrew Conduit, Krishna Dibyatara, Nidya Kalangie and Purnomo Suryomurcito).
Januar Jahja & Partners (Andrew Diamond, Prudence Jahja and Eva Dewi Kartika) and K&K Advocates (Justisiari Perdana Kusumah, Siti Miriam Nabila and Risti Wulansari) each had three lawyers named to the list. A number of local firms are represented by two lawyers each: Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, Biro Oktroi Roosseno, FAIP Advocates & IP Counsels, Iman Sjahputra & Associates, Inter Patent Office, Makarim & Taira S. and Winuriska, Prabawa & Partners.
Our survey includes only lawyers working at law firms in Indonesia. Most of the lawyers named to our list have multiple practice specialties. Many of them are litigators, while others concentrate on prosecution work or provide strategic advice.
All of them have something in common: they are Asia IP’s IP Experts for Indonesia.

Indonesia’s IP Experts is based solely on independent editorial research conducted by Asia IP. As part of this project, we turned to thousands of in-house counsel in Asia and around the world, and asked them to nominate private-practice lawyers, including foreign legal consultants, advisers and counsel.
The final list reflects the nominations received combined with the input of the editorial team at Asia IP, which has nearly 50 years of collective experience in researching and understanding the legal market in Southeast Asia.
All private practice intellectual property lawyers working at law firms in Indonesia were eligible for inclusion in the nomination process; there were no fees or any other requirements for inclusion in the process.
The names of our 50 IP Experts are published here. Each IP Expert was given the opportunity to include their biography and contact details in print and on our website, for which a fee was charged.
