Korea Joins the Hague Agreement

Korea has recently deposited its instrument of accession to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement for the International Registration of Industrial Designs at the headquarter of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The agreement will come into effect on July 1, 2014, bringing the membership of the system to 62.
The Hague System for the International Registration of Industrial Designs makes it possible for industrial design applicants to obtain protection in several countries through a single application in one language with one set of fees in one currency.
Simplifying the process of multinational registration, the system also streamlines the subsequent management of the industrial design registration, since it is possible to record changes or to renew the registration through a single procedural step, according to WIPO.
Korea’s accession is expected to revitalize the Hague System, and WIPO is eagerly anticipating its arrival as a contracting party, according to the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
