Korean gov’t to boost KIPO ties for stronger IP protection
09 May 2025

The Korean government will improve its collaboration with associated agencies to better protect industrial technology and intellectual property in the face of severe global competition in innovative technologies, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy recently announced.
Officials said that, in a joint seminar on economic security, the ministry discussed plans to collaborate with the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) to boost their IP protection capabilities. The decision comes as the number of technology leak cases continues to rise.
According to the statistics by the National Intelligence Service, Korea has identified over 100 cases of technology leakage over the last five years, resulting in a cumulative financial harm of W23 trillion (US$16.4 billion).
“Robust protection of technology and intellectual property is critical to strengthening economic security,” said trade minister In-kyo Cheong. He emphasized the government will make “all-out efforts” to promote fundamental national policies and improve capacities to safeguard them by aggressively exploiting patent information.
