What to expect in 2023 AIPPI World Congress

The International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, known as AIPPI (Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Intellectuelle), is getting ready to host its annual World Congress in Istanbul this coming October. The event invites participants from all over the world to gather at the Hilton Bomonti Hotel and Convention Centre in Istanbul from October 22 to 25 to connect with IP professionals and deepen their knowledge of IP.

Annie Tsoi, Secretary General at AIPPI, shared that the most important features of this year’s congress will be the scientific work and sessions that focus on burning topics such as unified patent court (UPC), technological development and experimental use. In addition to panel sessions, plenary sessions and AIPPI cafés, this year’s programme will also feature a UPC mock trial, as the UPC in Europe is getting into practice now.

“In general, the congress has a substantial scientific programme, thanks to the related bodies and committees of the organization,” said Tsoi. “Throughout its long history, AIPPI has adopted more than 700 resolutions and reports, each established or discussed during the AIPPI World Congresses.”

She added there will be specific sessions focusing on study questions, which will result in resolutions on current, hot IP topics. These resolutions will help to develop and harmonize laws for the protection of IP. Besides bringing educational value to participants, the congress also provides an environment conducive to promising face-to-face networking opportunities.

Tsoi said: “Young Members and First Time Attendees are examples of dedicated sessions to meet fellows and friends and get to know the ins and outs of an AIPPI World Congress.” Moreover, she suggested that the networking events will feature flavours of West and East, being staged at exclusive cultural locations that make the experience certainly unforgettable.

“One example could be the Cultural Evening, which will take place in Binbirdirek Sarnıcı,” she added. “This historic cistern is steeped in cultural and artistic significance, providing an unforgettable setting to immerse yourself in the culture of Türkiye. All venues will offer strong historical and cultural experience to our participants.”

Speaking of the advantages of hosting the congress in Istanbul, Tsoi said the city has a long history that witnessed the rise and fall of the world’s empires. “Istanbul is the world’s only metropolis placed on more than one continent. It is a vibrant and diverse bridge between Asia and Europe, making it convenient for many AIPPI members from around the world to travel to. On top of that, the city is one of the 20 most visited cities in the world.”

Tsoi believes it will be useful for all legal professionals worldwide to attend the congress, as AIPPI has a long history and is a reputable international IP association.

“It could be extra interesting for Asian professionals because there will be a booth for each of the Hangzhou and Yokohama Congress in 2024 and 2025. All participants will benefit from different viewpoints when discussing with each other and can use these discussions and networking moments for business opportunities,” she said. “To conclude, the international event provides an excellent opportunity to meet and build personal and professional relationships.”
