Cambodia unveils dedicated GI database

Cambodia has unveiled its dedicated geographical indication (GI) database under the country’s newly established Digital IP Hub.

The launch represents a milestone in the modernization of Cambodia’s intellectual property system, enhancing transparency, improving public access to information, and strengthening awareness of protected origin-based products.

“This is the first time we have a centralized and comprehensive record of registered geographical indications, rather than relying on sporadic public announcements,” said David Haskel, a partner at Abacus IP in Phnom Penh. “It provides greater transparency and legal certainty for brands, producers, and practitioners, enabling them to better assess protection, manage risk and identify potential collaboration or enforcement opportunities.”

The database contains a full list of registered GIs and registrant details, clarifying ownership and representation. It also includes the official product specifications, which set out the standards and control mechanisms governing each GI, offering insight into how quality and origin are defined and monitored.

“With improved visibility and administrative clarity, we are likely to see an increase in GI applications and registrations. At the same time, authorities and industry stakeholders may place greater emphasis on supporting GI exports and strengthening the development of local brands built around protected origin products,” said Haskel.
