Indonesia’s burgeoning creative economy was in the spotlight this weekend, positioned not merely as a collection of local crafts but as a powerful new engine for national growth. Top officials from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy championed this vision during a visit to The Local Market, a vibrant exhibition featuring 140 entrepreneurs in Jakarta on Saturday.

Deputy minister Irene Umar said the event showcased the seeds of Indonesia’s future intellectual property. She observed that local creators are excelling beyond aesthetics, building brands rooted in compelling stories and sustainable values.

“Each booth we see today is not merely selling products,” Umar remarked. “Each one is building a brand, creating a character and designing with meaning.”

The ministry sees collective events like this as crucial for fostering a nationwide movement. To accelerate this, the government is promoting programmes like Ekraf Hunt, a digital platform designed to launch Indonesian IP onto the global stage. The strong government presence – including the ministry’s Director of Architecture and Design, Sabar Norma Megawati Panjaitan – signalled a firm commitment to backing this pivotal sector.
