Philippines expresses strong confidence on report on counterfeits

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) expressed strong confidence in receiving a positive assessment from the United States Trade Representative’s (USTR) forthcoming report on counterfeit markets.

This optimism is fueled by recent achievements, including a record-high P40.98 billion (US$696 million) in seized counterfeit goods last year and a major expansion of its anti-piracy e-commerce pact, which saw signatories jump from 43 to 108.

While the USTR’s 2024 report flagged Greenhills Shopping Center, IPOPHL highlights the Philippines’ 12-year streak of remaining off the USTR’s separate Special 301 watch list as proof of sustained, high-level reforms.

“The country remains confident that its latest achievements and sustained reforms will be reflected positively,” said IPOPHL Acting Director General Nathaniel Arevalo, adding that the USTR review is an “opportunity to demonstrate tangible progress.”
