20th GIPC: Twenty editions, shaping the next frontier of IP

The global intellectual property landscape is entering a period of profound transformation. Artificial intelligence is reshaping the way inventions are created, creative works are produced and commercial decisions are made. Quantum technologies are opening new frontiers of scientific and technological innovation. Advances in healthcare, semiconductors, digital infrastructure and biotechnology are creating new questions around ownership, access, regulation and value.

At this critical juncture, the 20th Global Intellectual Property Convention (GIPC) will bring together the international IP community on February 4-5, 2027 at T-Hub, Hyderabad, India’s leading innovation ecosystem.

Marking 20 editions of global IP dialogue, the 20th GIPC is more than a milestone. It is an opportunity to examine how intellectual property must evolve alongside the technologies, business models and innovation ecosystems that are defining the next decade.

Twenty editions. Shaping the next frontier of IP.

Over the course of two decades, GIPC has developed into a platform for meaningful conversations among IP professionals, policymakers, industry leaders, innovators, academics, legal practitioners and technology experts.

The 20th edition seeks to build on that legacy while looking decisively ahead.

The central question is no longer simply how intellectual property should protect innovation. It is increasingly about how IP can enable, govern and create value from innovation in an era of unprecedented technological change.

Artificial intelligence sits at the heart of this transition. From AI-generated content and copyright to AI-assisted inventions, ownership, authorship, patentability and liability, the technology is challenging assumptions that have shaped IP systems for decades.

The emergence of Agentic AI, where AI systems can increasingly plan, execute tasks and operate with greater autonomy, adds another layer to this debate. As machines become active participants in innovation processes, the IP community will have to consider questions that were once largely theoretical: Who owns an AI-assisted invention? Where should responsibility lie? How should existing legal frameworks respond to increasingly autonomous systems?

These questions will form part of the wider conversations at GIPC 2027.

From AI to quantum: The new innovation frontier

The technology agenda at the 20th GIPC extends well beyond artificial intelligence.

Quantum computing and emerging technologies are creating new opportunities while simultaneously challenging existing approaches to patents, trade secrets, technology transfer and strategic IP management.

The semiconductor industry presents another crucial frontier. With countries and companies investing heavily in semiconductor manufacturing, design and research capabilities, intellectual property has become increasingly intertwined with technological sovereignty, supply chains and national competitiveness.

Healthcare and biotechnology will also feature prominently in the programme, with discussions examining the intersection of public health and IP. The balance between incentivizing innovation and ensuring access to essential technologies and healthcare solutions remains one of the most consequential questions facing the global IP system.

Other key areas of discussion will include AI governance and regulation, digital public infrastructure, licensing and technology transfer, traditional knowledge, women in innovation and the future of global IP.

Where global IP expertise meets India’s innovation economy

The choice of Hyderabad as the host city for the 20th GIPC is particularly significant.

One of India’s leading technology, pharmaceutical, life sciences and innovation hubs, Hyderabad represents the convergence of research, entrepreneurship, technology and industry. Hosting the convention at T-Hub, one of India’s prominent innovation ecosystems, places the global IP conversation directly within an environment where new technologies and businesses are being developed.

This setting is especially relevant to the central theme of the 20th edition: moving beyond IP as a mechanism of protection towards IP as a strategic tool for innovation, investment, collaboration and value creation.

For businesses, this means looking at IP not merely as a legal asset but as part of a broader commercial strategy. For policymakers, it means designing frameworks that encourage innovation while protecting public interest. For innovators and startups, it means understanding how intellectual assets can support investment, market access and long-term competitiveness.

A global platform for difficult questions

The 20th GIPC will also create space for debate around some of the most pressing questions facing the IP community.

Among them is a fundamental question for the AI era:Can an AI system be an inventor?

As AI increasingly participates in research, experimentation and discovery, the traditional human-centred conception of invention is being tested. The debate is no longer confined to patent law. It touches upon technology, ethics, economics and the very definition of innovation.

Similarly, discussions around public health and IP will explore how intellectual property frameworks can support innovation while addressing the need for affordability, accessibility and equitable healthcare.

These are not questions with simple answers. That is precisely why they belong at an international forum.

Connecting the IP community

A major strength of GIPC has always been its ability to bring diverse perspectives into the same room.

The 20th edition will welcome professionals from across the IP ecosystem, including in-house IP leaders, patent and trademark practitioners, technology companies, pharmaceutical and life sciences organizations, startups, researchers, policymakers, academics, investors and innovation professionals.

The convention is designed not simply as a series of presentations, but as a platform for exchange: ideas meeting experience, legal frameworks meeting technology, and innovation meeting commercial strategy.

As the IP landscape becomes increasingly interconnected with technology and business, these cross-sector conversations are becoming more important than ever.

Looking beyond the milestone

Twenty editions provide an opportunity to look back at how far the IP ecosystem has travelled. But the greater opportunity lies in looking forward.

The next 20 years are likely to challenge many of the assumptions on which today’s IP systems are built. AI-generated creativity, autonomous systems, quantum technologies, advanced healthcare, digital infrastructure and rapidly evolving innovation models will require new thinking from governments, businesses and the global IP community.

The 20th GIPC aims to be part of that conversation.

On February 4-5, 2027 at T-Hub in Hyderabad, the global IP community will come together not only to discuss where intellectual property stands today, but to consider where it needs to go next.

Twenty editions. Two decades of dialogue. A new frontier ahead.

The future of IP is being shaped now. And the conversation is only beginning.
