Sam Mickan joins James & Wells as patent practice partner

James & Wells appointed Sam Mickan as a partner in its Australian patent team on January 13, 2026, expanding its capability in technology-focused patent work.

Mickan was previously with Davies Collison Cave, where he advised clients on patent protection and IP strategy across a range of technology sectors. He has a background in electrical and electronic engineering, with experience spanning software, information and communications technology, and other high-technology fields. His practice has included advising both emerging tech companies and multinational corporations.

Adam Luxton, a partner at James & Wells, said the appointment supports the firm’s continued growth in Australia and New Zealand and strengthens its ability to advise clients operating complex technology environments. “He combines deep technical expertise with a sophisticated understanding of the commercial drivers that matter to innovative businesses, which aligns perfectly with the way James & Wells supports its clients,” Luxton added.

Before becoming a patent attorney, Mickan spent two years in physics research laboratories at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, working with XC Zhang’s Terahertz Technology group, which led to multiple patent filings. He’s also fluent in German, having studied as an undergraduate at Universität Stuttgart and worked briefly at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg.

In his new role, Mickan will advise Australian and international clients on developing and executing patent strategies, with a focus on software, ICT, electronics, research organizations and high-growth tech companies.
